Osterlandsk 1889 Copenhagen has a large selection of black teas from all over the world. Our black tea range ranges from the finest qualities of pure black teas to the more traditional pure black teas. Below you can read a little more about black tea. The tea districts, the various black tea plantations and tea qualities SRILANKA & CEYLON Tea from Ceylon, or Sri Lanka, as it is called in Sinhalese, are powerful and dark red varieties with a higher tannin content than other teas. Therefore, one must be careful to observe the draw time of 3 min. so as to avoid extracting unnecessary bitters. The most traditional areas of tea production are Dimbula, Uva and Nuwara Eliya. UVA The most famous district in Ceylon is Uva. Monsoon and the Global wind 'Passat' in this area affect tea production and harvest times are in August and February - the so-called "Peak Seasons". During these periods, the tea in the world with the most intense aroma is probably harvested. Uva High Grown Broken Ceylon BOP The Uva district is in the highlands and the tea from here is strong and full of flavor. The best tea grades are picked between July and September. Nuwara Eliya This district has the highest ranked tea plantations and the teas from here are called the Ceylon Tea Champagne, among others because of the extreme heights in which the tea bushes grow and thus the slower growth, which gives the teas from here a delicate taste. The district is thus considered the scene of the best and finest tea qualities. Premium teas are picked all year round. Ceylon Shawlands OP This Ceylon tea is a very nice tea quality with its long, narrow, dark leaves, making it lighter and more round than other Ceylon tea grades. A very aromatic large-leaved Ceylon tea with a nice amber color and full-bodied, nuanced tea taste. INDIA ASSAM Assam is a tropical tea province in northeast India. Geographically surrounded by Bangladesh Myanmar, Buhtan, Tibet and China. Assam is the world's largest total tea district located on both sides of the Brahmaputta River. About 2,000 tea plantations produce Assam teas, which are powerful, aromatic with their distinctive malted tea flavor. The teas from Assam are also very suitable as milk teas. In addition to the well-known Second Flush teas, the plantations also produce First Flush teas and green Assam teas. DARJEELING For tea lovers, this area is one of the most beautiful tea places on earth. The tea from this region is of the highest tea quality. In the First Flush period the tea has a light, fresh and floral tea taste and in the Second Flush period a strong, full and incredibly aromatic tea taste. Darjeeling is the finest, most aromatic and floral tea to be found and rightly considered among the world's finest tea varieties. The Darjeeling teas are thus also called 'the champagne' of the Tees! The Darjeeling tea grows on the southern slopes of the Himalayas at altitudes from 900 meters up to 2400 meters above sea level. Tea farmers have, for generations, hiked around their bushes, around drying and fermentation, and created an excellent tea that is incomparable in its tea flavor. Darjeeling tea has 4 great harvest periods. The first harvest - First Flush tea - is in the spring from early March to mid-April. The second tea harvest - Second Flush - is in the summer season in the months of May and June. The third tea harvest - Monsoon Flush / Rain Flush - is from July to September. The fourth tea harvest - Autumn Flush- is in October to November. The harvesting periods are of great importance for the quality and taste of the tea. The difference in the harvest times can be compared to wines and their vintage wines. The climatic conditions for tea cultivation also have a significant influence on the quality of the tea. Since the teas are picked in so-called blocks, the same tea bush can produce very different teas. The finest tea qualities are picked in the March and April months and are the so-called First Flush tea qualities - the first harvest of the year. If the teas are picked during or during a period of rain, the rain will have flushed the finest tea juices from the leaves of the tea bush and the tea will consequently lose some of its tea flavor. The finest tea result is thus obtained in the harvesting periods in the dry months. Every year, Osterlandsk 1889 Copenhagen selects what Darjeeling tea qualities our tea house has to offer to our customers. Tea Plantations, from which we choose our Darjeeling tea qualities, therefore vary according to which plantation we believe can offer the best teas of the various Darjeeling tea qualities that year. Osterlandsk 1889 Copenhagen currently offers 8 different different qualities of pure, unmixed and fine Darjeeling teas. CHINA The cultivation of tea in China extends over colossal areas and the tea plantations are scattered at great distances. This means that the black tea can vary greatly in taste and color. From medium and light, over sweet and aromatic, to strong and earthy. Common to all black teas they have a very low tannic acid content and often have a slightly smoked tea flavor. Keemun Keemun tea is known for its mildness and is almost devoid of tannins. Therefore, if you want a tea with as low a tannin content as possible, Keemun tea is the right choice. YUNNAN In Yunnan province, in southwestern China, green tea has been grown for approx. 1700 years. Only since 1939 has the black tea been produced. Due to the geographical conditions and climatic conditions, Yunnan can be compared to Assam in terms of tea production. Medium fullness, with spicy body. The light fruity and earthy tea taste gives the tea its unique characteristics. China Lapsang Souchong Special tea, which does not consist of the typical two leaves and a shoot, but instead consists of the larger and more powerful leaves of the tea plant. The Tea Leaves are roasted over exotic wood and give a typical smoked tea flavor. Oolong The Chinese word Oolong means "red dragon". These teas mainly come from southeastern China and Taiwan and are semi-fermented teas, which means that the teas' oxygenation process is stopped before they would otherwise become black teas. The oolong teas are very large-leaved, and they have a slightly sweet tea flavor with a nice amber color, as well as an elegant, floral and peach-like tea character. Oolong Fancy Superior The finest Oolong tea quality that can be raised. Intense floral tea bouquet and incredibly aromatic tea. Lightly spicy overtones and almost endless tea aftertaste. A sublime tea for connoisseurs! Oolong Formosa Choicest This Oolong Tea has a nice amber golden color. The taste of tea is pleasantly soft and round and with a hint of honey. MIXTURES OF THE HOUSE Many of our teas are some we mix ourselves. The Admiralty tea which is the whole foundation of Osterlandsk 1889 Copenhagen is the tea that started it all. Over the years, several teas have been added, and especially in recent years herbal teas with licorice and tea blends with fruit have gained in popularity. Admirality Tea In 1889, the Osterlandsk Teahouse was founded by a Naval Sailor who, two years earlier in the year 1887, had attended the English Queen Victoria's 50th anniversary. The English Admiralty had offered a tea that made so great an impression on the private S?ren Wilhelm Jacobsen that he brought the Tea recipe on the mix back home to Copenhagen. Here he founded our proud company Osterlandsk Teahouse, where the special "Admirality Tea" is still one of the house's popular mixes. Over the years, this tea has been treasured not only by tea-loving citizens of Copenhagen, but by customers from all over the world. Lady Gray In 1904, by letter dated November 11, our company received from the Secretariat of His Royal Highness Prince Valdemar in Copenhagen, permission to use the silhouette of Princess Marie of O'rleans as a logo, as well as calling the current Lady Gray tea "Ladies' Tea". This letter is today on display in our original shop at N?rrevold in Copenhagen. Lady Gray is based on the same grounds as Admirality tea, but added a little bergamot oil. Where the tea flavor in this blend is incredibly full, the taste of bergamotte is considerably lighter than that of a classic Earl Gray.
